Professional Development
At Morgan Lewis, we provide our associates with the opportunities and tools they need to become accomplished, successful lawyers, and support their long-term career goals through one-on-one and group coaching, mentoring and formalized training.
· Academies: Annual academies for new lawyers, midlevel associates, and senior associates bring together lawyers from across practices and the globe to focus on personal and professional development through discussions and interactive, on-your-feet exercises fostering relationships with members of firm leadership, clients and peers while developing and practicing skills critical to career growth.
· Mentoring: Every Morgan Lewis associate is paired with a partner and associate mentor who provide career and practice guidance. Associates can also take advantage of in-house coaching support. A dedicated and confidential resource, our director of attorney coaching works with associates to support their professional growth and enhance their practice management skills, as well was provide guidance to associates as they navigate transitions and changes throughout their careers.
· Morgan Lewis Institute: The firm provides ongoing professional skills training for all associates through our Morgan Lewis Institute. Throughout the year, we offer several legal writing training programs targeted to various seniority levels. We also offer training on topics such as presentation skills, time management, and wellness, among others.
· Practice Area Training: Our practices provide customized substantive training for their associates through ongoing formal programs, mentoring, shadowing, and academies such as the Morgan Lewis Trial Academy and Patent Prosecution Academy, where associates have the opportunity to practice their skills “on their feet.”
· Associate Initiatives: We recognize the importance of providing flexibility to associates through innovative initiatives such as our Return to Work Program that supports associates who are preparing for or returning from an extended leave through a formal reduction in hours, individualized leave counseling and mentoring and guidance on best practices for returning to work.
· Upward Review: measures the effectiveness of our senior lawyers and the impact they have on their peers. As part of that process, partners and counsel are reviewed by the associates with whom they work, practice leaders are rated by their partners, and Management Committee members are reviewed by practice leaders and partners. Our lawyers take what they learn from their reviews and use that feedback as a valuable tool for personal and professional growth.
Engagement and Inclusion
Building a team of lawyers with diverse perspectives and experiences is a core value at Morgan Lewis. We aim to support inclusion in the legal profession and to attract future leaders who are committed to the same. At Morgan Lewis our inclusion efforts include four components that impact every aspect of our culture: active leadership involvement, inclusive recruiting and outreach, client and community engagement, and career development. Finally, all associates are invited and encouraged to opt into one of our lawyer networks/affinity groups, which are open to all lawyers within the firm. Affinity groups include Asian American/Asian, Black, Disability Awareness, First Generation, Hispanic/Latino, LGBTQ+, Middle Eastern/North African, Women, Parent, and Veterans.
Pro Bono
Morgan Lewis is committed to serving the public good. Our innovative, award-winning pro bono practice spans all of our offices around the globe. Our primary focus is on helping economically disadvantaged individuals and families in the communities where we live and work. We also provide legal services to nonprofit and nongovernmental organizations whose mission is to serve vulnerable individuals and communities. Our lawyers use their time and skills to ensure access to justice for people who otherwise could not afford it.
We have a long history of service to the traditionally underrepresented members of society and pride ourselves on our commitment to supporting pro bono work by our lawyers. We have pledged to annually contribute, at a minimum, an amount of time equal to 3% of the firm’s total billable hours to pro bono work. Consistent with this commitment, we strive to ensure that our pro bono clients receive representation that is, in all respects, on par with the representation provided to our other clients. Among other things, that means that we have long treated pro bono hours as billable, and we recognize and reward lawyers who have achieved success in pro bono representations.
We expect every eligible lawyer to annually contribute at least 20 hours to pro bono representations, but in practice, most contribute more. In fiscal year 2023, 100% of our lawyers met our 20-hour challenge. In total, our lawyers contributed more than 118,500 hours to pro bono representations, an average of more than 50 hours per lawyer.
